What to use for county jail inmate lookup

The Federal Bureau of Prisons Inmate Locator covers federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present. A person who is not in BOP custody may still be held by another correctional or law-enforcement system, so a federal no-match does not answer a county-jail question.

Find the correct jail before searching

  1. 01
    Identify the arrest/custody county

Start with the county connected to the custody event.

  2. 02
    Identify the operator

Use the official county site to identify the responsible custody agency.

  3. 03
    Use the official inmate search

Search by booking/inmate number when available, not only name.

  4. 04
Call records/booking if no online search exists

Ask what information is public and how current it is.

Custody level matters

Custody Start here Common mistake
County jail Official county custody agency Substituting the federal BOP locator
State prison State department of corrections Assuming a county booking roster covers sentenced state prisoners
Federal prison Federal Bureau of Prisons Treating BOP as a local jail search

Federal no-match is not a county no-match

A person who is not in BOP custody may still be held by another correctional or law-enforcement system, so a federal no-match does not answer a county-jail question.
